Morocco’s government and the two parliament chambers expressed the Kingdom’s desire to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup, at the conclusion of a joint study meeting held this Thursday, October 26 at the House of Representatives.
As host country of the Men’s 2030 World Cup, along with Spain and Portugal, Morocco has set its sights on hosting another major FIFA competition. Morocco will also host both the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in 2024 and the Men’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the following year.
To date, only two countries have expressed an interest in hosting the 2031 WC: China and England.
The Women’s World Cup has never been held on African soil.
China hosted the first edition in 1991, followed by Sweden in 1995, the USA in 1999 and 2003, China again in 2007, Germany in 2011, Canada in 2015, France in 2019, and finally the Australia-New Zealand duo in 2023.
Morocco took part in the competition for the very first time at this Oceania edition. The Atlas Lionesses reached the historic Round of 16.
The FRMF has made women’s soccer one of its priorities, as Morocco is the reigning runner-up and organizer of two consecutive editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (2022 and 2024).
Furthermore, FIFA has still not designated the host country for the next edition, scheduled for 2027. FIFA plans to make an announcement on May 17, 2024.
While bids are open until December 8, 2023, four submissions have been made official. South Africa will be competing with Brazil, the United States-Mexico duo, and the Belgium-Germany-Netherlands trio.
