Former Moroccan Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel was reelected for another eight-year term as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday, in Mumbai, India.
The IOC also voted to re-elect six other members, including Prince Albert II of Monaco (as an independent member) and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (independent member).
Age limit was also taken into consideration, as IOC re-elected Valeriy Borzov (Ukraine, independent member, re-elected until the end of 2029), Gunilla Lindberg (Sweden, re-elected until the end of 2027), Syed Shahid Ali (Pakistan, independent member, re-elected until the end of 2026), and Nenad Lalovic (Serbia, as president of the International Wrestling Federation, elected until the end of 2028).
The terms of two members of the IOC, Luis Mejia Oviedo (Dominican Republic) and Gerardo Werthein (Argentina), were extended another four years.
Nawal El Moutawakel is the first Moroccan, Arab, African, and Muslim woman to have won an Olympic gold medal in the 400 m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
