As Israel’s war on Gaza escalates in anticipation of an Israeli ground attack, Morocco’s Lower House issued a statement expressing “great concern and deep sorrow” over the devastation and ramifications of the “painful and dangerous events” in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in Gaza, over the last ten days.
In the statement issued on Monday, the House asserted that “innocent civilians are the victims of the unprecedented military actions,” which coupled with a comprehensive blockade by Israel, are depriving over two million Palestinians of their right to healthcare and essential needs such as water, electricity, food, and medicine.
The House affirmed Morocco’s support of the Palestinian people in their struggle for their legitimate rights guaranteed by international treaties and resolutions, noting Morocco’s historical efforts and initiatives to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and a firm rejection of violence.
The current situation in the region is a result of “political and diplomatic deadlock of the Palestinian issue, as well as continuing violations, unilateral measures, and settlement activities” by Israel, pointed out the statement.
Additionally, the House reaffirmed its appreciation for Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Gaza and to alleviate the suffering of civilians by lifting the blockade, which in fact Israel initially imposed on the Gaza Strip 16 years ago.
It called for an end to the displacement of civilians and for ensuring that they have basic needs met and access to healthcare, and particularly security that civilians in the entire region should be able to enjoy and that Israel respects international humanitarian law.
“The House demands an immediate end to this suffering,” the statement read. It called for a ceasefire to allow for diplomacy and political dialogue to set the stage for establishing an independent Palestinian state with appropriately recognized institutions and borders, with Al Quds as its capital.
