Morocco’s carrot exports to Spain have witnessed a remarkable upswing during the 2022/23 (July-June) season, soaring 5.7 times compared to the previous year, according to data analytics platform “EastFruit.”
Morocco’s carrot shipments to Spain were relatively limited, with volumes ranging between 20 and 280 tons per marketing year. Over six years, only 936 tons of carrots found their way to the Spanish market.
However, the current season has seen a substantial shift, with more than 1,500 tons of Moroccan carrots, valued at $720,000, reaching Spain. The peak of this surge was observed in February and March of this year.
Spain is a prominent player in the global carrot trade, ranking 8th among the world’s carrot suppliers. Although Moroccan carrots constituted only 1% of Spain’s total imports over the past six seasons, their share has increased significantly, reaching 7% by the end of the marketing year (MY) 2022/23.
In the MY 2022/23, Morocco surpassed Belgium, the second-largest carrot exporter in Europe, becoming Spain’s fourth-largest carrot supplier after the Netherlands, Portugal, and France.
Morocco’s carrot exports have undergone an astonishing expansion over the past six years, increasing by 7.6 times. In the MY 2022/23, these exports reached nearly 52,000 tons, with a total value of $12.4 million.
This remarkable growth has catapulted Morocco from the 30th place in the global ranking of carrot suppliers in 2017, to the 18th place in 2022. Moroccan carrots have been exported to 34 countries during the current season.
