Despite the earthquake, more than 960.000 tourists visited Morocco during September, a significant growth of 7% compared to the same period last year, said Morocco’s Tourism Ministry in a statement.
The ministry said that despite the quake and Covid-19 aftermath, this September was a pleasant surprise in that it surpassed the previous four Septembers.
Morocco has received a total of 11.1 million tourists in 2023, topping its total for the entire year of 2022.
Morocco also experienced a boost in the tourism sector with the annual meeting of the IMF taking place in Marrakech.
Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, noted that the occurrence of the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Marrakech is the most significant contributor to September’s record-breaking numbers. In choosing Marrakech, the governing body highlighted an important milestone that illustrates the attraction of Marrakech, the resilience of the tourist sector, and the success of our country’s post-earthquake efforts.
Even after this tragic earthquake, the growth of Moroccan tourism has held its own, and is forecast to receive 14 million tourists by the end of December 2023, she concluded.
