The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced today that the Kingdom of Morocco, the sole remaining candidate, will be the official host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025 following the meeting of the CAF executive committee held in Cairo on Wednesday.
Last month, CAF head Patrice Motsepe announced that the host country for 2025 would be revealed on Sept. 27 with the decision for 2027 to be made the same day. A meeting is being held today to determine the winning bid for AFCON 2027.
Yesterday, Algeria withdrew its bids to host both the 2025 and 2027 tournaments one day before the CAF’s scheduled announcement.
Walid Sadi, the newly appointed president of the Algerian Federation of Football (FAF), announced in a televised statement that the Federation had sent an official letter to the African Confederation of Football withdrawing Algeria’s bids. However, he gave no specific reasons.
The FAF later stated in a press release that the rationale behind its decision is to solely concentrate on Algerian football. “This withdrawal is due to the new approach followed by the FAF regarding the strategy for developing football in Algeria.”
In October 2022, the African Union decided to strip Guinea of hosting the 2025 competition due to its failure to timely complete necessary infrastructure. Since then, the African Union has been receiving bids without disclosing the selected host country.
Senegal is said to be favored to host the 2027 event.
