Morocco’s road fatalities decreased by 5% in 2022, as compared to numbers in 2021, and 7.3% compared to 2015, according to Mohammed Abdeljalil, Minister of Transport on Friday in Rabat. The announcement was made during the 8th session of the Board of Directors of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA).
The minister announced that the fatality numbers are decreasing among all category of drivers, except those who drive two-wheeled vehicles, and that more measures must be put in place to protect this category of drivers. In fact, the number of deaths per year among two-wheeled vehicle drivers grew by 31.1% between 2015 and 2022.
The minister emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of the upcoming “Safe Moto” plan, which includes many measures to improve road safety for various two-wheel categories, including the use of protective helmets and enforcement of driver compliance to the legal code that governs road safety.
Also during this meeting, the minister presented a list of project that had been carried out by NARSA in 2022, including the implementation of regional road safety committees, the creation of the road safety school certificate, the organization of training workshops for road developments in urban areas, continued implementation of a road safety program for professional drivers, the commissioning of a first batch of new fixed radars, and the acceleration of digitization of NARSA, among others.
