Elon Musk said on Monday that he is debating having all X users, formerly Twitter, pay a “small monthly fee” to use the social media platform, in what he described as an effort to keep bots and fake accounts off the platform.
During a live streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhyahu on artificial intelligence, Musk said “It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots.”
He further disclosed that X has 550 million monthly users who create between 100 and 200 million posts every day.
He did not say whether he included bots in that amount.
Musk was also unspecific about how much it would cost to use X, only that it would be a “small amount of money.”
The meeting with Netanyahu follows only weeks after Musk suggested that he might sue the Anti-Defamation League for allegedly charging X and him of antisemitism, causing advertisers to flee the social network.
“Obviously, I’m against antisemitism[…]I’m against anti-really anything that promotes hate and conflict,” he said.
Currently, X offers a premium membership service that costs $8 US dollars per month for premium users to access certain capabilities such as the ability to modify a post and have preferential ranks in chats and searches.
