The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that a 4.6 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Mediterranean Sea region, approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Tobruk, in northeastern Libya.
The earthquake struck at 03:33 AM Libya time on Wednesday, at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was also estimated to be 281 kilometers away from Egypt’s Marsa Matruh city.
Residents in Libya’s eastern coastal areas of Al Qa’rah and Kambut villages, situated 30 and 50 kilometers from Tobruk, felt the tremors.
Libyan Geophysicist Hakim Al Muslati had warned of the potential for a stronger earthquake in Libya during this turbulent period, suggesting it might occur within Tobruk and its surroundings.
He additionally cautioned that the country’s western part is not safe because of the presence of vast faults running for 300 kilometers, rendering it vulnerable to earthquakes.
These developments come as Libya continues to recover from the impact of Storm “Daniel,” which deluged eastern regions, causing flooding, casualties, and significant damage, especially in the city of Derna.
