The health situation in the earthquake-affected Al Haouz region is “under control,” WHO Regional Emergency Director for Eastern Mediterranean Region Richard Brennan told Al Jazeera on Friday.
Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb had affirmed on Tuesday that the health sector put together its entire logistical and human resources to meet the needs of populations living in the central regions of Morocco, especially in Al Haouz, which was hit by a massive earthquake last week. The latest updates show a death toll standing at 2,946, and 5,674 injured victims.
Ait Taleb had assured that Morocco was able to bring the situation under control without deploying or mobilizing human resources in other regions.
Search and rescue teams are racing time to assist the affected populations. The military have set up large field hospitals to provide onsite medical care for the wounded.
Director of Medicines and Pharmacy at the Ministry of Health, Aziz Mrabti had said in a statement to MAP last Monday that the inventory of necessary medications and healthcare supplies is sufficient to handle emergency and crisis situations.
He noted that more than 300 tons of medications and medical supplies had been sent to the areas affected by the Al Haouz earthquake, more than enough to treat the injured.
