The International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) unveiled the five contenders for FIFA’s 2023 Best Goalkeeper Award on Thursday. Yassine Bounou, the goalkeeper for Morocco’s national team and now for Saudi club Al-Hilal, secured a nomination along with other star goalkeepers such as Thibaut Courtois, Ederson, André Onana and Marc-André ter Stegen.
FIFA declared, in a statement, that voting is open until October 6.
Nominees were selected based on their outstanding performances during matches on December 19, 2022, and August 20, 2023.
FIFA gives a variety of awards: The Best – FIFA Women’s Player, The Best – FIFA Men’s Player, The Best – FIFA Women’s Coach, The Best – FIFA Men’s Coach, The Best – FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper, The Best – FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper, and the FIFA Fans’ Award.
Recently, Bounou was shortlisted for France Football’s annual Ballon d’Or (or Golden Ball) and Yachine trophies. These trophies recognize the best player and best goalkeeper respectively during the 2022-2023 season.
