The National Press Union (SNPM) expressed its concern this week that several French media outlets were engaging in an anti-Moroccan campaign, especially after the earthquake that occurred in Al Haouz last Friday. In a press release, the SNPM described the French coverage as “politicized against the kingdom” and “unprofessional.”
The Uniom denounced critical descriptions of Morocco and Moroccan people, especially caricatures published by Charlie Hebdo and Libération, in addition to an “offensive” interview with the Moroccan journalist Samira Sitaïl on BMF TV.
The Press Union criticized also the behavior of many journalists deployed to affected areas and insisted that their behavior did not conform to the ethics of the profession.
They specifically called out questions to the interviewees, pictures that were taken inappropriately or without permission, and the general way they approached the Moroccan people.
The union expressed its thanks to the French media that showed professionalism and ethics in its coverage of the earthquake, and for their active participation in solidarity activities with victims.
