A Moroccan navy unit intercepted a group of 98 Senegalese illegal migrants off the southern city of Dakhla on Wednesday. The coastguards assisted and provided first aid to the stranded would-be migrants, including two women.
A military source explained that the boat had departed from Senegal’s coast. The group was handed to the gendarmerie for routine procedure.
Morocco has become a coveted route and a transit country for illegal migrants, especially sub-Saharan ones, trying to cross to Europe. Each week, coastguards patrolling Moroccan waters and authorities combing the northern regions (the closest to the Spanish-occupied enclaves of Sebta and Melilla) intercept dozens of undocumented migrants.
