A minor 4-magnitude tremor was felt on Tuesday morning at 10:39 in Talat N’Yaaqoub, a rural commune in the province of Al Haouz, Marrakech. This “light” earthquake occurred just 10 km from Ighil, the epicenter of the deadly 7-magnitude earthquake that shook the area on Friday night.
Nasser Jebbour, official at the National Institute of Geophysics (ING) reported that no immediate damages were recorded and that only few people felt the slight tremor, given the relatively low magnitude.
“It’s important to note that the intensity of aftershocks decreases over time…the region is traversed by a significant geological fault known as the South Atlas Fault.”
The expert went on, saying, “There will be more aftershocks in the coming days or weeks, but they are expected to be weaker.”
The new death toll of the main earthquake that hit Morocco reached 2,904, all laid to rest, in addition to 5,530 injured receiving medical care.
Onsite special intervention teams are striving to reach inaccessible, mountainous villages, and provide relief to the most affected populations.
