The new death toll of the powerful 7-magnitude earthquake that hit Morocco Friday night reached 2,904 (all of them laid to rest), in addition to 5,530 injured, according to a 1 p.m. update by the Interior Ministry on Tuesday.
Onsite special intervention teams are racing time to reach inaccessible, mountainous villages and provide relief for the disaster-hit populations.
Al Haouz is the only province to record new deaths (1,643), according to the update. No further fatalities were reported in other areas.
The Moroccan Army set up a large field hospital in Asni village (Al Haouz, Marrakech region), upon the orders of King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and FAR Chief of General Staff.
The facility has 16 tents and is staffed by a team of 24 doctors, 48 nurses, as well as support personnel, providing around-the-clock, extensive medical services.
Rescue operations are still under way, with around 20 helicopters from the Royal Air Force, Royal Gendarmerie, Royal Navy, as well as some private helicopters deployed to help with rescue operations in remote areas.
The international community has rallied to Morocco’s aid, showing its support, and the kingdom, has welcomed all the expressions of solidarity from around the world.
