Moroccans performed the absentee funeral prayer (Salat al-Ghaib), Sunday after duhur prayer, in all mosques across the Kingdom for victims who died in the massive earthquake that rocked Morocco Friday night.
In a moving show of solidarity, a similar prayer was performed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Palestinians and Moroccans, as well as officials from the Council of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in Jerusalem and the Bait Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency, all came together to pray for the dead.
King Mohammed VI had instructed the Minister of endowment and Islamic affairs to perform the absentee prayer in all Moroccan mosques for those who perished in the quake. He also declared three days of official mourning with flags at half-mast.
Rescue efforts are intensifying with the backup of foreign countries as Spain and Qatar. Teams are racing time to reach inaccessible, remote villages in the outskirts of Marrakech (central Morocco), which was the hardest hit.
The latest quake death toll stands at 2,012. The number of the wounded is 2,059, including 1,404 gravely.
