Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Thursday that the MINURSO (United Nations Mission in Sahara) has not supplied any report to confirm the alleged killing of Abba Ali Hamudi, the Commander of the Sixth Military region (known as the Mahbes region) and three other polisario separatists.
This came in response to a question in a press briefing about the availability of any confirmation or report from the MINURSO about the incident.
The polisario’s propaganda machine claimed that the high-ranking officer, who is close to Brahim Ghali (leader of the separatists’ movement), was hit by a Moroccan drone, manufactured in Israel, west of the berm (sand wall). The officer was allegedly killed along with three other members making up the convoy.
Farhan Haq added that any such reports would need to be fully investigated.
Reports of this incident coincide with the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sahara Staffan de Mistura’s visit to the region which took him to the southern cities of Laayoune and Dakhla. De Mistura met with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita on Friday in Rabat.
