Just three regions of Morocco, Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, generated 58.6% of Morocco’s national gross domestic product (GDP) (at current prices) in 2021, according to Morocco’s Statistics and Forecasts Office (HCP) in a report released on Tuesday.
The Casablanca-Settat region contributed over a third (32.2%) of national GDP, while the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima regions created slightly more than a quarter (26.4%), with 15.9% and 10.5%, respectively, reported the HCP.
Fez-Meknes generated 8.2% of GDP, Marrakech-Safi 7.9%, Souss-Massa 6.2%, Beni Mellal-Khenifra 5.9%, and the Eastern region 5.3%, making up the second third of GDP.
The three southern and the Draa-Tafilalet regions contributed only 7.9% of the national GDP, each contributing 4.8% and 2.8% to GDP, respectively.
In 2021, GDP revenues were 1,244.9 billion DH, having rebounded with growth of 8% after a deep recession of 7.2% in 2020, due mostly to the COVID pandemic.
At current prices, GDP was worth 1,274.7 billion DH, up 10.6%. Overall, regional differences in revenue generation have intensified. According to the HCP, the average absolute divergence (the average of the absolute deviance between the GDP of the individual regions and the average regional GDP) increased from MAD 66.4 billion in 2020 to MAD 71.8 billion in 2021.
