During a daily press briefing on September 1, the UN addressed concerns about the UNSG Personal Envoy for Sahara Staffan de Mistura, and said it could not confirm any visit by de Mistura to the region.
In an answer to a question about Mistura’s plans to visit Morocco, Stéphane Dujarric, the UN Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, responded, “Mr. de Mistura seems to attract many reports, theories, and rumors.” He added, “nothing is official until it is announced from here. So, I have nothing to share with you at this point.”
Dujarric also addressed concerns about Mistura’s absence and inactivity on August 16. He stated that the diplomat was “planning to maintain and intensify engagements with all parties directly affected and with broader international interests.”
The spokesperson said future visits to the region are in the pipeline, without disclosing any more specific information.
De Mistura’s latest tour of the region occurred between July and September 2022, starting in Morocco and proceeding through Algeria, Mauritania, and the Tindouf camps
