Three Morocco destinations, the northern city of Chefchaouen, the ancient fortress city of Ksar Aït Benhaddou, and the Fez Medina are among the best tourist attractions in the world that do not cost a penny to visit, according to vacation rental management company “Casago.”
The company based its ranking on TripAdvisor reviews showing that Chefchaouen is the highest-rated free-entry attraction in Morocco, boasting 76.40% five-star reviews, followed closely behind by Ksar Aït Benhaddou with 67.74%, and then Fez with 62.09%.
Chefchaouen, located in the Rif Mountains of Morocco, is a picturesque town known for its striking blue-painted buildings. It attracts visitors with its narrow winding streets lined with flowers amid vibrant blue walls. The town is also famous for its traditional handicrafts, including woven textiles and pottery, as well as its stunning architecture, serene ambiance, and rich cultural heritage.
Fez, the oldest imperial city in Morocco, is a captivating blend of ancient history and vibrant modernity. Its UNESCO-listed medina, Fes el-Bali, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, bustling souks, and magnificent architectural wonders. The city is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the iconic Al-Attarine Madrasa and the Qaraouine Mosque, said to be the world’s oldest university.
Ksar Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Ouarzazate. It features a tight labyrinth of traditional earthen buildings rising up a hill encircled by massive walls. Within the defensive walls, which are strengthened by corner towers, the homes are crammed close together. The Ksar is also well-known as a filming location for movies such as “Gladiator” and “Game of Thrones.”
Other listings on the African continent include Cape Town south Africa’s Lion’s Head, which tops the list as the highest-rated attraction in Africa with 76.48% of five-star reviews.
Topping the list worldwide, Casago ranked the Luc Vanlaere Harpist, or Mini Harp Museum, in Bruges Belgium, as the highest five-star reviews for free destinations (94.54% of five-star reviews), followed second by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in the U.S.A. (92.85%), and third by Horseshoe Falls in Canada (92.70%).
