The Algerian Navy shot four Moroccan citizens on Tuesday, two of whom died, when they accidentally crossed the maritime border between Morocco and Algeria on their jet skis near Saidia beach.
The four were all on vacation at Saidia beach, enjoying sun and sea, and were riding together, two persons on each jet ski, before being shot. Three of the four victims are also French nationals.
A video that has been circulating on social media since yesterday evening shows what seems to be the floating bodies of two of the victims who were left for dead by the Algerian Navy before members of the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie recovered their bodies.
The two victims on the first jet ski were severely injured with gunshot wounds, and were rushed to an Algerian hospital, both in serious condition. One of the young men had to undergo a complicated surgery to remove a bullet from his stomach.
The two riders on the second jet ski who were also shot drowned at the scene.
The Algerian Navy allegedly opened fire without warning as soon as the jet skis had crossed the border demarcation line. The incident has stirred considerable public disapproval and has also raised serious concerns about the security of the region.
