Morocco’s Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi won the bronze medal in the Women’s Marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Saturday, becoming the first Moroccan athlete to compete and get a medal in this category.
Gardadi, 31, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 17 seconds.
Ethiopian Amane Beriso Shankule won the gold medal with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds; while Gotytom Gebreslase, also from Ethiopia, was awarded the silver medal for a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 34 seconds.
This is Morocco’s second medal in the tournament after Soufiane El Bakkali snatched gold in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Morocco is represented by 17 competitors (12 men, 5 women) in the current 2023 World Championships.
Morocco had previously competed in 18 World Athletics Championships, winning a total of 31 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, and 8 bronze medals).
