The Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) strongly denounced the deteriorating living conditions of Sahrawis in Tindouf camps.
This came in a letter from Secretary General of MSP Hach Ahmed Bericalla to UNSG Personal Envoy for the Sahara Staffan de Mistura on International Humanitarian Aid Day.
The MSP emphasized in the letter the acute and distressing circumstances that afflict the living conditions of Sahrawis in general, and specifically in the Tindouf camps, where the population, especially women and children, are without “adequate protection and assistance.”
The movement particularly expressed worry about the limited presence of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the Tindouf camp.
The movement also expressed concern about the lack of freedom and the growing insecurity in the camps, due to the restrictions imposed by the Polisario, in addition to the proliferation of drug gangs and organized crime.
MSP also stated that the failure of the political process in Geneva has made many Sahrawis lose confidence in the UN system and its mechanisms, noting that considering the continuing hostility between Algeria and Morocco, any progress toward a final solution to this conflict would be challenging, especially amid new regional conflicts and the current international situation.
MSP pointed out that it will hold new Sahrawi talks within the framework of the Second International Conference on Peace and Security in the Sahara, like the first one held last year in Las Palmas, Spain.
