Morocco expanded its avocado export to Germany, reaching 5,000 tons worth $17 million in the 2022-2023 season, quadrupling the numbers from five years ago in the 2016-2017 season, according to a press release from East Fruit, a horticulture information platform, on Monday.
From July 2022 to May 2023, Morocco exported 45,000 tons of avocados, valued at $139 million to 25 importing countries, which illustrates a significant increase compared to 2017, when the exports failed to reach 22,000 tons to just nine importing countries.
Morocco established sales volume records for the previous four seasons in a row and became the 9th world avocado exporter thanks to its great exporting strategy.
Morocco’s biggest avocado importers are mainly based in Europe, with Spain, France, Netherlands, and Germany leading the way.
Morocco’s avocado crop for many years has been threatened by a lack of water resources. Globally, and in Morocco, the industry is often criticized due to the extreme amount of water avocado trees consume.
Nonetheless, avocado farms in Morocco have been increasing, and according to Abdellah El Yamlahi, president of the Moroccan Avocado Association, yield will increase by 20% in the upcoming season.
Avocado is the fastest-growing horticulture export, and is predicted to be the most exported fruit by 2030. Global output has also been increasing significantly, and it is expected to reach 12 million tons by 2030.
