None of Morocco’s universities qualified to be listed among the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shangai Ranking.
American universities dominated the top 10 universities with Harvard University (1st), Stanford University (2nd), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3rd), University of California, Berkeley (5th), Princeton University (6th), Columbia University (8th), California Institute of Technology (9th), and University of Chicago (10th) all being featured.
Two British universities made it to the top 10; the University of Cambridge was ranked 4th, and University of Oxford took 7th place.
Eight South African universities were on the list, headed by the University of Cape Town.
In the Arab world, twelve Saudi universities qualified, with King Saud University raking in the top 101-150 universities.
Egypt was also represented by seven universities, topped by Cairo University. According to the Shanghai Ranking website, ARWU considers universities that play host to award winners of significant academic medals, such as the Nobel Prize and the Field Medal. They also consider universities based on several academic or research performance indicators, including alumni performance after graduation, papers published, and highly cited research or researchers.
