King Mohammed VI pardoned 653 convicts on the anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People, the Ministry of Justice announced on Saturday.
The beneficiaries are either detained or serving a suspended sentence. An additional group convicted in terror-related cases also received the pardon.
The pardon benefits 464 detained inmates, including 5 who received it over their remaining prison terms, 455 who had their terms reduced, and 4 who had their sentences commuted from life imprisonment to fixed terms.
The beneficiaries serving a suspended sentence are 173: 30 had pardon over their prison sentences or remaining terms, 10 people benefited from pardon over their imprisonment terms while maintaining fines, 126 people had their fines annulled, and 7 received pardon over both their prison terms and fines.
Sixteen individuals convicted in cases of extremism and terrorism also received the royal pardon after expressing loyalty to the nation and rejecting extremist ideas. Eight inmates received pardon over their remaining prison term, one had both his remaining prison term and fine annulled and seven had their sentences reduced.
