The United Nations addressed concerns over UNSG Personal Envoy for the Sahara Staffan de Mistura’s absence and inactivity.
In a recent press briefing, Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric asserted that the UN emissary is still in touch with the parties to the Sahara conflict.
The spokesperson said future visits to the region are in the pipeline, without disclosing the specifics.
There have been speculations that de Mistura is considering stepping down but all of them were brushed off by the UN.
“The Personal Envoy is planning to maintain and intensify engagements with all parties directly affected and with broader international interests in a variety of formats, including regional visits and opportunities for bilateral engagement,” Dujarric had explained back in May.
