Morocco’s former Olympic champion and previous Minister of Youth and Sports, Nawal El Moutawakel, was re-elected to the World Athletics Council during its 54th Congress in Budapest (Hungary), according to Morocco’s News Agency (MAP).
The title-holder, who made history by becoming the first Moroccan, Arab, African, and Muslim woman to win a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, will join a group of 13 members making up the international body.
El Moutawakel serves on the executive board of the International Olympic Committee and has been a member of the World Athletics Council since 1995.
British Sebastian Coe has been re-elected as President of World Athletics for a third and final four-year term. Coe, who has been in charge since 2015, was the only candidate for this election.
The World Athletics Championships starts on Aug. 19-27 in Budapest.
