Morocco’s national electrical grid reached its record peak ever of 7310 MW on Friday at 9:30 p.m., 0.8% higher than its previous record peak in 2022, said the Ministry of Energy Transition on Tuesday.
The record is tied to global warming which is affecting major economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and fishing, as higher temperatures increase the demand for power.
The national peak demand for energy is being met due to 8,300 MW of power available during the evening peak largely from renewable and low-carbon sources.
According to climate estimates, by 2050 the number of days with a maximum temperature exceeding 37°C will increase throughout the Mediterranean area, more than doubling from 30 to 60 days in North Africa, southern Spain, and Turkey.
The Ministry of Energy Transition is pushing for a more robust power system in Morocco to combat climate change, as well as more efficient energy consumption by industry and the public that will contribute to environmental preservation and sustainable development.
