Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian landed in Riyadh, on Thursday afternoon, for a first visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of his Saudi peer, marking a steady amelioration in bilateral ties, according to Iranian news agency “IRNA”.
Saudi officials were photographed hugging the top Iranian official upon his arrival at the airport.
Amirabdollahian and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan held talks on shared concerns involving the Muslim world as well as recent global developments, added the same source.
The two countries resumed diplomatic relations in March and appointed new ambassadors. Iranian ambassador Alireza Enayati is expected to begin his mission after today’s milestone.
Iran and Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties in 2016, after Saudi diplomatic facilities in Iran were attacked amid protests against Riyadh’s execution of Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
