Qatar is willing to mediate between Morocco and Algeria and participate in any formal process toward reconciliation, said Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari on Tuesday in response to a query from the newspaper Al Quds Al-Arabi.
At the weekly briefing of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha, Al-Ansari spoke on a number of topics related to the country’s foreign policy, highlighting Doha’s activity and international efforts.
Al-Ansari asserted that Algeria’s Ambassador to Qatar Amirouche Rakah had delivered a letter from Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, addressed to Qatar’s emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, concerning the relationship between Algeria and Qatar, and suggesting ways to support and strengthen it.
The Qatari official added that bridging the rift between Morocco and Algeria is a major concern of the State of Qatar.
A few days before the briefing, Qatar’s Emir had received a letter from King Mohammed VI.
The border between Morocco and Algeria has been closed since 1994 due to the Moroccan Sahara issue, despite repeated calls for reopening it by Morocco’s King in recent speeches.
Algeria unilaterally severed connections with Morocco in 2021, halting the passage of a gas pipeline to Spain via Morocco and prohibiting all Moroccan planes from entering its airspace.
