The proportion of young Moroccans between the ages of 15 and 34 without any education declined dramatically from 35.7% to 8.9% between 2000 and 2022, according to data released by the Statistics and Forecasts Office (HCP) on Tuesday.
While since 2022, the overall percentage fell from 35.7% to 8.9%, a 26.8 percentage point drop, women (47.7% to 12.1%) and rural residents (59.5% to 15.6%) experienced the most significant decreases.
According to the HCP, the percentage of young people with a secondary education or higher has climbed significantly from 19.7% in 2000 to 42.7% in 2022, again with women and youth in rural areas performing well.
The HCP observed that the gender gap among young people with a secondary education or higher has shrunk by 5.1 percentage points since 2000, while the proportion of rural individuals has increased from 5% to 21.9%.
Additionally, the Office emphasized that the number of young people aged 15 to 34 remains high compared to Morocco’s total population and will continue to grow by 2030, but at a slower rate than the overall population, from around 0.3% to 0.9% between 2023 and 2030.
Morocco’s total youth population rose from 11.5 million in 2014 to 11.8 million in 2023. Between 2014 and 2023, the proportion of urban youth increased from 60% to 66%.
Morocco’s 60+ demographic climbed from 9.4% in 2014 to 12.7% in 2023, a 3.3 percentage point increase.
