Morocco’s fresh and frozen berry exports totaled 190,907 tons in June 2023, an 11% decline year on year, according to figures by the Moroccan Association of Producers and Exporters of Red Fruits (AMCERF).
Morocco’s fresh berry exports (defined by the AMCERF as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries) increased by 8% to 134,578 thousand tons in comparison to the equivalent period in 2022.
Exports of frozen berries fell by 37%, amounting to 56,328 tons.
With a value exceeding 6.6 billion Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) during the agricultural season 2021-2022, the fluctuations of Morocco’s berry sector have considerable social and economic impact on the Kingdom. Over 19 million business days were created in this sector in the 2022-2023 season, with 51% being in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
The land used for berry cultivation expanded from 2,680 hectares in 2008 to 12,155 hectares in 2023. By 2030, Morocco aims to expand this area by 4,200 hectares, to boost production to 360,000 tons, to diversify markets, and to spur exports to 230,000 tons.
