85% of the wildfire that broke out earlier this week in the Cap Spartel woods in Tangier (northern Morocco) was successfully contained, Fouad Assali, official at the National Agency for Water and Forests, told MAP news agency.
The fire initially started in the “Donabo” location on Thursday at around 6:00 p.m. Strong winds fanned the fire and the area’s difficult topography made the firefighters’ job more difficult.
Nearly 600 elements from the Civil Defense, Royal Armed Forces, Auxiliary Forces, Royal Gendarmerie and others rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames.
Four “Canadairs” belonging to the Royal Air Force, and two “Turbo Thrush” aircrafts pertaining to the Royal Gendarmerie were mobilized.
The flames ravaged vast swaths of land totaling 40 hectares, the official stated, adding that some properties suffered minor damages but no casualties were recorded.
