The recent Casablanca premeditated hit and run that took the life of the targeted person and injured his companion went viral as it was caught on camera. The executioner and his abettor (believed to be his brother-in law) were swiftly apprehended by the police.
The tragedy caused an uproar especially among social media users, who demanded heavy, deterrent sentencing and warned against the mere slap on the wrist the driver previously got. In fact, the suspect’s background check revealed he was charged with two counts of manslaughter in 2018, in another road accident.
Rumor mills are speculating that the individual might get off the hook as he comes from a well-known, wealthy family.
The Public Prosecutor at Casablanca’s Court of Appeal issued a statement detailing the ins and outs of the polemical case, on which a ruling was handed in 2019. According to him, the Casablanca’s Court of First Instance found the suspect guilty of vehicle loss of control and poor driving maneuvers and fined him 8,100 MAD in total.
The public prosecution appealed the soft sentencing on the same day (03/12/2019), and upped the fine to 30,000 MAD. The judge also passed, in absentia, a one-year sentence with no remission and ordered a two-year suspension of the culprit’s driving license.
The verdict will be executed once it is finalized, the prosecutor assured.
