Firefighters are racing time to put out a fire that broke out, on Monday, in a tinder-dry, forested region in the province of Tetuan (north). According to local authorities, the blaze is nearly under control and no human lives were lost in the process.
Ground and air intervention teams, 300 strong, are onsite to extinguish the flames. Four amphibious water bombers: two “Canadairs” belonging to the Royal Air Force, and two “Turbo Thrush” aircrafts pertaining to the Royal Gendarmerie were mobilized.
The flames ravaged vast swaths of land, totaling 20 hectares, as per the testimony of a local official.
The National Agency of Water and Forests (ANEF) had warned of a “medium” to “severe” wildfire risk. A Code Red was issued for the northern regions of Tangier-Assilah and Taounate. The state-run ANEF base its predictions on the heterogeneity of forest type, flammability and topo-climatic variables.
