The killing of 17yo Nahel by the brutal French police became a symbol of racial inequality and oppression in France, however, tens of thousands of Algerians would pick the former colonizer over the homeland anytime. Illegal escape to Europe is also on the menu to counteract poor living conditions which are prevalent in Algeria, wrote British daily “The Sunday Time” on Sunday.
In responding to Nahel’s purportedly manslaughter, French President Macron cold-bloodedly described the incident as inexplicable and irrationally called for a stoical acceptance of the death by the masses. With the mounting protests against the French police, Macron came up with the statement that the riots were evidence of a crisis of civilization and unsuccessful integration, added the newspaper in an opinion article penned by Jo Daniel.
The writer said that Algerians were not taken aback by the tragedy as illegal migrants are used to such demeaning treatment, and can endure it just to get away from a country where corruption and nepotism are rife.
The writer pointed to TikTok which has become a platform for youngsters posting videos and pictures to document a real suicide mission. Traffickers also do not miss the chance to post promotional videos with secure contact information.
The US think tank Freedom House had said that Algeria is a presidential republic under the sway of the military and the ruling party, rating the country as “not free”.
The article also highlighted the country’s declining economy despite Algerian president Tebboune’s efforts to leverage gas resources.
Two-thirds of the 13,000 illegal migrants crossing to Spain in 2021 were Algerians, with the number of visa applications tripling last year despite a high rejection rate (80%).
