Following extreme heatwaves that scorched Europe and the UK, Xlinks and the British Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) are evaluating the viability of the Morocco-UK Power Project as part of climate emergency response, said a Xlinks release.
DESNZ’s staff has been working on granting a CfD for Xlinks, investing more than 9,500 hours in the first six months of this year to advance the project through an ongoing Business Case process.
The Project, upon completion, would provide 8% (3.6 GW) of the UK’s power needs from onshore renewables in Morocco via the world’s longest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable.
CEO of Xlinks Simon Morrish stated: “The support of the UK Government is crucial in realizing our ambition to supply British households with secure, affordable, and green energy in the face of the growing climate crisis”.
Clean electricity generated by Guelmim-Oued Noun-based solar and wind farms (with a capacity of 10.5 GW) will be transported via four 3,800-kilometre HVDC submarine cables.
This first-of-its-kind endeavor will produce enough clean power for seven million houses in the UK.
