Morocco’s women football squad broke prognosis with a historic victory against South Korea on Sunday. Against all misgivings and poor projections, the lionesses won their first Women’s World Cup match, defeating South Korea 1-0 in the second round of Group H, at Hindmarsh Stadium in Australia.
Ibtissam Jraidi scored an early tie-breaker goal in the sixth minute, putting Morocco in third position in its Group with three points.
The Moroccan women footballers are making their mark on the global tournament, with defender Nahila Benzina as the first player wearing hijab, and Ibtissam Jraidi as the first Moroccan and Arab player to score in the international competition.
Goalkeeper Khadija Al-Rumaishi also stood out by blocking numerous Korean attempts to score.
The win comes after a 0-6 defeat to Germany in the first round.
