As temperatures in certain areas of the world are at record high this July, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community on Thursday to move past its inertia and address climate change and its many ramifications.
“The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived.” According to fresh data from the European Union and the World Meteorological Organization, July is on track to be the warmest month on record, said Guterres in a speech Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York.
A scorching heatwave is hitting across the northern planet, encompassing areas of Europe and America, with record-breaking temperatures sparking catastrophic wildfires in nations adjacent to the Mediterranean such as Greece, Italy, and Algeria.
Guterres labeled the northern hemisphere’s extreme heat as a “cruel summer.”
“For the entire planet, it is a disaster,” he warned, adding that “short of a mini-Ice Age over the next few days, July 2023 will shatter records across the board.”
Antonio Guterres cautioned of the perils of climate change, stressing that the phase of global warming has ended and that the world needs to get ready for the life-threatening period of global boiling, “Climate change has arrived. It’s frightening… this is only the beginning. The period of global warming is over, and the era of global boiling has begun.”
