The government removed subsidies for transport professionals, which it had originally launched to preserve citizens’ purchasing power, especially in light of the continued rise in fuel prices.
Secretary General of the Democratic Organization of Transport and Logistics, Mustapha Chaooûne, said that the support allocated to transport professionals related to fuel was suspended during the past 3 months.
The trade unionist explained that fuel prices are still very high, and professionals suffer from several problems due to the high prices of fuel at gas stations.
He added that many transportation companies recently went bankrupt, due to the high fuel prices, the absence of fair competition, and the overall expenses.
He pointed out that starting next September, if the government does not take necessary measures, the transport sector will experience significant congestion and will be threatened by striking workers, stressing that the unions had previously suggested to the government the need to develop solutions to keep pace with transportation trends in order to maintain industry solvency, as well as to preserve the purchasing power of citizens.
Chaooûne went on to say that trade union bodies in some cities, including Casablanca, demanded a review of the tariff for taxis in the first and second categories.
He called on the government to take the situation seriously and to follow the advice of transport professionals, especially the issue of fuel, which has greatly affected the sector. At the same time, he urged a credible discussion to find legal and sustainable solutions to maintain the viability of this public utility.
