Morocco is mulling a potential deal to import livestock from Australia against a backdrop of severe drought, said Australian outlet “ABC” on Monday.
Australia’s Department of Agriculture stated that Morocco has initiated negotiations for the importation of livestock, including proposed conditions for trade.
Rural Export and Trading WA managing director Murray Frangs said that the Australian Government is still standing by its plan to ban the live export of sheep by sea.
Frangs added, “We outlined there are a number of factors that we’d have to overcome to get there and didn’t see that there would be any opportunity in the shorter to medium-term to address that”.
Exporters are required under the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) to have arrangements in place for the humane handling and slaughter of livestock in the importing country.
