Morocco has been increasing its nut imports that surpassed 10,000 tons in January-April 2023, to become the 22nd importer globally, according to East Fruit.
The hard fruit imports comprise cashew nuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, and numerous other categories, the most important of which are shelled almonds and in-shell walnuts.
Almonds account for 74% of all nut imports in Morocco (in value terms), with walnuts accounting for 13%.
Almonds are surging in Morocco, although production is insufficient to meet market demand.
It is worth noting that imports of almonds and in-shell walnuts fell in 2022, while imports of other products such as cashew nuts, in-shell pistachios, and shelled hazelnuts increased.
Overall nut imports in Morocco in 2022 exceeded $186 million, with the United States serving as the top supplier due to its dominant position in the global nut market.
