The United States applauded Israel’s recent recognition of the Moroccan Sahara, recalling that the US pioneered that decision in 2020 and kept an unchanged stand since then, said US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller on Tuesday during the press briefing.
He said that the US “fully supports the UN Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General Staffan de Mistura as he intensifies efforts to achieve an enduring and dignified political solution” for the Sahara.
Miller went on to say that the resumption of relations between Morocco and Israel has been “an unequivocal positive for the region, and we look forward to working with these close US partners to expand the circle of peace further.
Morocco’s royal office announced Monday Israel’s decision to recognize the Sahara as Moroccan, emphasizing that the Israeli government was also considering constructing a consulate in the southern city of Dakhla to further solidify its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
On December 10, 2020, former US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, formalizing Washington’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the decades-long dispute over the territory.
