Morocco supplied 248.8% of watermelons to the European market than did Spain, through the end of April, with a total of 9.14 million kilos sold throughout the European Union during that period, said Hortoinfo.
Morocco was the fruit’s third largest provider, after only Mauritania (18.57 million kilos) and Costa Rica (11.65 million). During the same time period, Spain sold only 2.62 million.
At the end of April, the average selling price of Moroccan watermelons was €1.23/kg, compared to €1.05/kg for the Spanish counterpart. The overall value of sales in the Kingdom was €11.29 million (€2.76 million in Spain).
It should be mentioned that Moroccan sales volume equaled that of Spain in 2016. During that year, the Iberian country supplied 12.13 million kilograms to the EU, while Morocco purchased 12.02 million kilos.
