Morocco intends to build two million social housing units to address the increasing demand for affordable housing, after a 600,000-unit program in 2010. The government also considers supporting financially first-time purchasers, said Minister of National Territory Planning Fatima Zahra El Mansouri on Tuesday.
To solve the housing conundrum aggravated by the COVID-19 epidemic, the Moroccan government has developed a social housing initiative. The plan is intended for low- and middle-income households, single moms, and widows who can pay between 300,000 and 700,000 dirhams for a dwelling.
The plan is a continuation of the 250,000 MAD social housing program and an implementation of a new housing strategy based on a the new development model.
The initiative entices real estate developers to construct tax-free 50-80 square meter houses by providing tax incentives and exemptions. The program, which was set to expire in 2020, was extended until 2026 to cover projects under way. Over 100,000 social housing units are anticipated to be built within that time frame, according to the Ministry.
The government plans to collaborate with industry experts to create a top-notch program guaranteeing decent housing.
