Morocco is recognized in the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) presented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), and shows that Morocco, along with 24 other nations, has decreased poverty by half in a record 15-year period.
This achievement demonstrates Morocco’s ability for rapid growth as well as its commitment to alleviating poverty.
The assessment of trends from 2000 to 2022, concentrating on 81 nations having comparable data throughout time, shows that rapid change is feasible. Cambodia, China, Congo, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Serbia, and Vietnam are among the countries that have reduced poverty by 50%.
According to the research, the number of Moroccans living in severe multidimensional poverty is only 1.4 percent, while the percentage of Moroccans exposed to multidimensional poverty is 10.9 percent.
Around 1.1 billion people worldwide live in extreme multidimensional poverty, accounting for over 18% of the global population. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are particularly affected, with 534 and 389 million people respectively. Middle-income countries have 730 million people, making poverty reduction initiatives crucial.
Combating child poverty is crucial, as children under 18 make up half of the MPI-poor population. Rural regions, which house 84% of the world’s poor, face disproportionate challenges in overcoming poverty.
Addressing rural and specific challenges can lead to significant progress in poverty reduction and a more inclusive, prosperous society for all citizens.
Talking about the effects of Covid-19 on poverty globally, a press release by the UNDP points out that: “Despite these encouraging trends, the lack of post-pandemic data for most of the 110 countries covered by the global MPI restricts our understanding of the pandemic’s effects on poverty.”
