On the occasion of Bastille Day, the traditional July 14th military parade commenced Friday morning in Paris on the Champs Elysées in the presence of Emmanuel Macron and guest of honor, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Macron was welcomed by a few boos and whistles from the audience, as “Macron Démission” (Macron resignation) was echoing in the streets.
The French president, who got used to such greetings from the masses, kept a calm mood as he was waving to the large crowds lining the ceremonial route.
130,000 police and gendarmes were deployed to prevent a flare-up of riots. Law enforcement officers actually arrested a demonstrator on the Champs-Élysées before Emmanuel Macron’s passage.
Numerous problems have befallen Macron during his time in office, including contentious reforms, scandals, and recent cases of police aggression.
Previous annual processions were also marked by similar instances of disruption. The Yellow Vest demonstrators targeted Macron in 2019, and boos erupted from the spectators in 2022.
Nonetheless, the French President declared that he is here to stay, asserting “I will not quit, I assure you…you should wait until 2027.”
