Iran is trying to infiltrate North African countries through its ideological inclinations and anti-west strategy, illustrated by arming the Polisario via Algeria in order to compete with the American and Israeli presence in North Africa and harm Morocco’s interests, said Danny Citrinowicz, a Research Fellow in the Iran Program at the Institute for National Security Studies.
During his interview with German state-owned international broadcaster DW, Citrinowicz said that Iran is trying to erode the American influence in the region and enrich its poor economy with nothing but its weapons and anti-western ideology.
Iran is using countries like Algeria and its disciple “the poliasrio”, by adding tension to the already-strained relations with Morocco, in a pushback against Israel and the US.
He added that Iran is trying to make “Morocco pay the price” for its resumption of ties with Israel, and the same applies to other signatories of the Abraham Accords.
Citrinowicz went on to say that Iran is bullying other countries that are preparing to normalize ties with Israel like Mauritania, as it did with Sudan.
