Algeria, as a member state of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), recognized the caftan as an intangible Moroccan heritage, reported a source from the ISESCO.
This decision was taken after Morocco submitted, through the Ministry of Culture, a list of intangible heritage elements for registration in ISESCO’s lists of heritage in the Islamic world.
The Islamic World Heritage Committee, affiliated with ISESCO, registered 26 new historical sites and cultural elements as part of purely Moroccan tangible and intangible heritage, including the Moroccan caftan.
Other items are also registered as Moroccan heritage such as couscous, the Moroccan art of Malhoun, the practices of the Mhdra, the Saharan tent, Moroccan calligraphy, the art of Moroccan cuisine, the Dakka Marrakchia, and various other elements of the nation’s heritage.
This comes as an update from recent developments in which Algeria claimed the caftan as emanating from its own cultural heritage.
